Verland "Smack" Wayns, Sr.
Grounds & Facilities Maintenance Worker II
Verland joined the Wissahickon Environmental Center (WEC) June 2017, but has worked with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation (PPR) for 34 years. He appreciates being able to provide a clean and safe environment for children to learn and play.
Verland with his beautiful wife, Deborah Wayns, he has two handsome sons, Verland Wayns, Jr. and Maalik Wayns. His recreation center work began his career with PPR, which was significant for his son, Maalik, who is a professional athlete.
Through PPR's programming, specifically the open gym and basketball programs, Maalik has access to the tools he needed to practice his passion. He successfully went on to play for the Roman Catholic basketball team, and received a full basketball scholarship to Villanova University. He played in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, and now plays overseas. Verland's son Verland Wayns Jr. is an actor and rapper.
Verland enjoys watching National Geographic Wild, because he's loved nature since he was a kid. Horses are his favorite animal, so having the Northwestern Stables so close is another reason Verland loves his work in the Wissahickon.
